Smoked turkey & coleslaw cholla roll
Wednesday, May 28, 2008
This is a really simple sandwich to make, but it’s success depends completely on the quality of the ingredients used – I buy all these from my local kosher deli, which is just the best place for fresh bread and tasty sandwich fillings.
Cholla is a braided Jewish bread enriched with butter and eggs to give a creamy coloured crumb and a very fine texture. It has a slightly sweet taste which makes it almost like eating a savoury cake. Normally it is found in large loaves for the Sabbath or Jewish festivals but my deli also makes small knotted rolls which are just delicious and perfect for a different sandwich.
I also buy some real smoked turkey breast (not reformed meat, yuck!) and some sweet coleslaw (for some reason coleslaw from kosher delis is just the best in the world.) Then simply cut open the cholla roll, add the turkey breast and a large dollop of coleslaw on top.
Mmmm… I might pop out to the deli this lunchtime now I think of it…
