Summer is here – let’s get a gelato!

London’s been freakishly hot and sunny for the last few days and it’s given Huddle’s own Italian gastro-enthusiast Davide the chance to sample a little piece of home. He says:
“I was wandering with my wife in the Holborn area when I made a discovery that suddenly changed my mood to match the weather. Without realising what I was looking at, I was suddenly struck by a vision – it was real Italian gelato. Lots of it. Beautifully presented. And I don’t mean ice cream, I mean gelato.
For those amongst you who don’t know the difference, I would suggest paying a visit to this site. The bottom-line is that gelato contains less fat than ice cream, more egg yolk, more milk and – unlike its blander cousin – has no air added to it, which makes it lusciously velvety and light at the same time.
Now – as far as I knew – there were only two places in the whole of London where a poor Italian soul in need of home comfort could possibly find some properly made gelato. One is the Gelateria Morelli, within Harrods. Their craft is impeccable but the end result is outrageously expensive. The other one is in “Oddono’s”, in Bute street, South Kensington. The flavors here are not presented with Morelli’s grand style, but the quality is excellent and it is (slightly) – cheaper.
Now I’ve found a third beacon, shining through the perpetual night of Ben & Jerry’s dullness, which combines the best qualities of the two London competitors. Scoop is its name and you will find it at 40, Short Gardens, WC2H 9AB.
I recommend you try the Pinolo Brisèe di San Rossore flavour made with pine kernals from the Tuscan forests (the owner – Matteo – comes from the city of Massa).
Go, for your own sake, and spread the word. If it’s true that we are what we eat, then you should go and upgrade yourself this summer!”
